Mikołaj Kałuszyński

Mikołaj Kałuszyński is a Ph.D. candidate at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (CAMK) in Warsaw.

The supervisors of his doctoral work are Prof. Dariusz Graczyk and Prof. Grzegorz Pieczyński.

The topic of his doctoral thesis regards semi-detached eclipsing binaries and exploring their usability for distance determination which may allow alternative measurement of distance to many nearby galaxies. Semi-detached eclipsing binaries have also constrained size of one of the components which fills its Roche lobe but on the other hand mass transfer between components may introduce several problems and observational artifacts.

Currently, he is involved in several projects which are listed below.

• Araucaria Project: astronomical observations and research on eclipsing binary systems.
• OCA Observatory: Development of the Observatory Systems.
• OPTICON Time Domain Astronomy: "Black Hole TOM" and "CPCS 2" Software for viewing and sharing observational photometric and spectroscopic data of time-domain targets, and for requesting and managing follow-up observations obtained with a network of telescopes.
• CHARA/SPICA Science Group: software for target selection.

Research interests

• eclipsing binary systems of Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds.
