Javier Minniti is a postdoctoral researcher at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (CAMK) in Warsaw.
In 2021 he defended his PhD at the Instituto de Astrofísica of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Santiago, Chile), where he used near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy to classify and characterize a sample of classical Cepheid candidates located at the far side of the Galactic disk. During his doctoral studies, he spent two years at the European Southern Observatory under the “ESO Studentship Programme”.
At the beginning of 2022 he joined CAMK to work in the Cosmic Distance Scale field, with Dr. Bogumił Pilecki on his project entitled “Understanding Cepheids: physical and empirical basis for our main tool for distance determination in the Universe” (SONATA BIS project, NCN, 2020/38/E/ST9/00486). The main goal of this work is to improve our understanding of Cepheid astrophysics, in particular, using a newly identified sample of Cepheids in binary systems.
Dr. Minniti also continues working on the use of classical Cepheids to study the properties of the far side of the Milky Way disk, the region of the Galaxy that is opposite to the location of the Sun.
