A research group led by Prof. Tomasz Kamiński from the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center in Toruń has secured observational time (9 hours) on the James Webb Space Telescope. This is the first research project led by a Polish institution on this telescope. In the fourth observational cycle of the telescope, 2,377 proposals were submitted, of which only 241 projects gained access to the telescope (see the list of projects). As part of the project carried out at CAMK, spectroscopic observations of the remnants of stellar collisions, known as red novae, will be conducted. The study of gas and dust in these objects will help to learn more about the causes and effects of collisions between low-mass stars.
