Postdoctoral position on Cepheid astrophysics

Applications are invited for one postdoctoral position at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (NCAC), in Warsaw, Poland, to work theoretical and observational aspects of classical Cepheids.

The successful applicant will join a team led by Dr Radosław Smolec working on the project “Classical Cepheids as testbeds for stellar evolution and pulsation theories" funded by the Polish National Science Center (Sonata Bis; 2018/30/E/ST9/00598). The project aims at resolving various problems of stellar pulsation and evolution theories using classical Cepheids as tools.

We seek a resourceful and creative researcher willing to work on determination of physical parameters of Cepheids based on their multi-band observations,  evolutionary modelling of helium burning stars, pulsation modelling of classical Cepheids. The post-doc is expected to collaborate with other team members, PhD students and members of the Araucaria team, as well as to take part in the observing programmes run at the Cerro Armazones Observatory in Chile.

Applications are welcome from candidates with strong background in any aspect of theoretical or observational stellar astrophysics. The ideal candidate should have solid programming skills, observing experience, research experience on pulsating stars, good communication skills, and the ability to carry out projects independently, while working constructively within a larger team. Previous research experience on one or more of the following topics would be an asset: modelling of stellar evolution with MESA or other code, modelling of linear/nonlinear stellar pulsations, population synthesis, experience of photometric/spectroscopic or interferometric observations of Cepheids.

The position will be for 3 years. The starting date is negotiable but could be as early as October 2020.

The gross monthly salary will be of 8376  PLN (net monthly: 5900  PLN - about 1390 EUR) and a travel budget is available.

Candidates are expected to have a valid PhD degree in astronomy/astrophysics obtained within 7 years from the date of starting the employment (career breaks such as for maternity/paternity leave can be taken into account).

The application should be sent by e-mail (as pdf files) to:

recruitment@camk.edu.pl by July 5th 2020.

Review of the applications shall commence immediately after that and short-listed candidates will be invited for interviews.

Candidates should submit the following documents:

  1. A copy of their PhD diploma or a binding statement of its date of completion;
  2. A CV including the list of publications;
  3. A short statement of research achievements and interests (maximum 3 pages);
  4. A scan of the signed DGPD form (NCN DGPD document available at: https://www.camk.edu.pl/en/about/ochrona-danych-osobowych/).

In addition, at least two letters of recommendation should be arranged and sent directly by their authors to the same e-mail address.

Questions about the position can be sent to: smolec@camk.edu.pl
