Postdoctoral position in the radiative pulsar astrophysics

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (NCAC), in Toruń, Poland, to work on the radio emission from pulsars.

The successful applicants will join the team led by Dr Jaroslaw Dyks and work on the project "Testing new ideas on the polarized radio pulsar emission", funded by an OPUS grant of the National Science Center,  nr 2023/49/B/ST9/01783.

The project involves diverse possible types of research such as:

1) development of a numerical code to model the intramagnetospheric inverse Compton scattering,

2) fitting physical models to radio pulse data, or 3) heuristic analysis of single pulse polarization data on a number of pulsars.

Applications are welcome from candidates with background in theoretical, observational or computational pulsar astrophysics. In particular, we welcome persons interested in radiative processes, plasma physics, special relativity, polarization, and those keen to solve hard geometric puzzles. The ideal candidates have solid programming skills and good knowledge of English.

The position is for two years (1+1). The planned starting date is 1st October 2024.

The gross monthly salary will be around 9400 PLN and a travel budget is available.

Candidates are expected to have a valid PhD degree in astronomy, astrophysics or physics obtained within 7 years from the date of starting the employment (extended by career breaks such as for maternity/paternity leave).

The application should be sent by e-mail (as pdf files) to: recruitment@camk.edu.pl by the end of April, i.e. 30 April 2024, 23:59 CET.

Review of the applications shall commence immediately afterwards.

Short-listed candidates may be invited for interviews.

Candidates should submit the following documents:

(1) a copy of their PhD diploma or a binding statement of its date of completion;

(2) a CV including the list of publications;

(3) a short statement of research achievements and interests (maximum 2 pages);

(4) a scan of the signed GDPR form - NCN GDPR document available at:

https://www.camk.edu.pl/media/uploads_current/o_instytucie/rodo/rodo_deklaracja_ncn_ang.pdf

5) additionally, at least two letters of recommendation should be arranged and sent directly by their authors to the same e-mail address as above.

The selection criteria include:

  1. the candidate's research achievements including publications in prestigious academic press /journals (50% of the final score);
  2. research-related achievements, scholarships, awards and research experience gained in Poland or abroad, research workshops and training courses, participation in research projects (20% of the final score);
  3. the candidate’s competence to carry out specific tasks in the research project (30% of the final score).

Questions about the position can be sent to: jinx@ncac.torun.pl
