Marek Sikora is a professor at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (CAMK) in Warsaw.


He has been associated with CAMK, where he is currently employed part-time as an emeritus professor, for many years: here he completed his doctorate in astronomy (which was first at CAMK, 1980); received habilitation in astrophysics (1990); and eventually was awarded the title of Professor of Physical Sciences (1999).


His research regards the astrophysics of high energies and focuses on large-scale outflows in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). A more extensive description can be found in the book “Across the Universe. Research at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences” (Warsaw 2020, pp. 72-73).


The list of and links to his publications can be found in NASA ADS database. One of the best cited works (about 1100 times) is "Comptonization of diffuse ambient radiation by a relativistic jet: the source of gamma rays from blazars?" (DOI: 10.1086/173633).


Prof. Sikora supervised the work of five doctoral students: Prof. Rafał Moderski (CAMK); Dr. Michał Błażejowski; Prof. Krzysztof Nalewajko (CAMK); Dr. Maitrayee Gupta (IRAP, France); Dr. Katarzyna Rusinek-Abarca.


Research interests
  • structure of geometric and optically thick accretion disks around black holes, angular distribution of their radiation, acceleration of particles in the field of their radiation;
  • study of the consequences of the possible production of ultra-relativistic protons in compact cosmic objects,
  • presence of positron-electron pairs in jets,
  • mechanisms of production of high-energy radiation in relativistic jets of active galaxy nuclei,
  • the study of the cosmological evolution of supermassive black holes (their masses and spins),
  • the jet production efficiency and an attempt to explain the radio bimodality of quasars.

Grants / Scientific projects
Prof. Sikora has participated in many national and international projects. The most recent of them (which he directed) include, i.a.:
  • “Efficiency of a jet production in radio galaxies with broad emission lines” (2017-2021). Funding information: OPUS project, NCN (2016/21/B/ST9/01620),
  • “Structure and dynamics of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei - modeling radiative properties of blazars” (2011-2014). Funding information: OPUS project, NCN (2011/01/B/ST9/04845).
