Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (CAMK PAN) invites applications for PhD studies in astronomy and astrophysics leading to a PhD degree. The subject of research is related to the POLONEZ project funded by Polish National Science Centre (NCN): “X-ray timing black hole binaries and active galactic nuclei” (PI: Barbara De Marco).
The research project aims at studying the properties and the geometry of the innermost accretion flow in black hole X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei through the application of X-ray spectral-timing techniques. The student will carry out analysis of data sets from the last generation of X-ray detectors. X-ray spectral-timing techniques will be used to investigate the complex phenomenology characterizing black hole X-ray binaries in different accretion states and different classes of active galactic nuclei.
Experience in reduction of X-ray data, X-ray timing analysis of accreting compact objects, and background knowledge of the X-ray properties of accreting compact objects will be preferred.
Proposed subject of PhD thesis: „An X-ray spectral-timing view of the innermost accretion flow around accreting black holes” (thesis supervisors: Andrzej Zdziarski/Barbara De Marco).
Application for the PhD studies at CAMK PAN should be prepared following the guidelines in the 'PhD studies' pages. Deadline for applications: 29 October. For further information contact Barbara De Marco
