Scholarships on observational stellar astronomy

The Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center is opening a call for 2 scholarships to work on ground based eclipse timing and analysis of satellite-borne observations of detached eclipsing binaries.

The scholarships are available to graduate students currently enrolled or accepted for the year 2019/2020 in a doctoral school in the fields of astrophysics, astronomy and physics.

The positions are open for ... years (however, no later than by the end of the project implementation period), starting October 1st, 2019.

The two candidates will work on the stellar astronomy, astrophysics and exoplanets topics encompassing characterization with high precision of eclipsing binary stars and search for circumbinary companions (stellar and planetary) thanks to the timing measurements of their eclipses. Both parts of the project will be based on a vast database of photometric and spectroscopic measurements from the "Solaris" project, satellite-based photometry from missions such as Kepler/K2, TESS, Gaia and high quality, precision ground-based spectroscopy.

The students will join the “Solaris” group at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Torun, Poland. We seek the best and the most independent students to take part in our  project. The selection will be fully based on the quality of the application.

For both positions experience in stellar astronomy, astrophysics such as e.g. photometric and/or spectroscopic observing, and/or data reduction and/or modelling, or experience in the area of exoplanets detection and/or characterization will be an advantage.

Applicants should submit an application including:
- a CV;
- a scan of signed GDPD form - available from: https://www.camk.edu.pl/en/about/ochrona-danych-osobowych/#rodocent (NCN DGPD documents);
- a copy of the most important diploma (master, engineer, bachelor) - including the list of course grades;
- as well as information on research experience (participation in research projects, publications, awards, etc) and research interests;
- at least one recommendation letter.

The deadline for application is: September 27, 2019.

Applications should be sent in the PDF format torecruitment@camk.edu.pl
Additional information can be obtained from: maciej@ncac.torun.pl

This competition is independent from the recruitment for the GeoPlanet Doctoral School at NCAC (https://www.camk.edu.pl/en/phd/).
