On October 18, 2020, Prof. Jan Hanasz passed away at the age of 86. He was a radio astronomer and head of the Astrophysics Laboratory of CAMK PAN in Toruń in the years 1981-1985. Prof. Hanasz was decorated with the Komandorski Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, a member of the Polcul Foundation Chapter and, from 2016, by resolution of the City Council, an honorary citizen of Toruń.
Prof. Hanasz was an active member of the Solidarity opposition movement in the 1980ies. His best known achievment was to organize a transmission of a television programme with anti-government content. It was obviously illegal and he was arrested and sentenced to 1,5 year imprisonment (suspended for three years). He was also degraded from the head of the CAMK's Division of Astrophysics I to a lower position and banned from traveling abroad.
