Post-doctoral positions in astrophysics

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (NCAC), the leading astronomical institute in Poland. The current research at NCAC focuses on both observational and theoretical studies of stars, stellar systems and circumstellar matter (photometry, spectroscopy, dynamics of stellar systems), search for extrasolar planets, physical processes around compact objects, structure of active galactic nuclei, high energy astrophysics and cosmology.

We especially seek candidates specializing in:

  • optical spectroscopy of stars, stellar systems and extragalactic objects, with experience on large telescopes,

  • physics of dense matter, evolution and dynamics of neutron stars,

  • galaxy formation and evolution, in particular evolution and properties of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group,

  • MHD simulations of accretion disks, jets and other forms of accretion flows,

  • stellar dynamics, numerical simulations of star cluster evolution - comparison with observations and study of the evolution of exotic stellar populations,

  • studies of accretion and outflows in X-ray binaries.

Specialists in other fields represented at NCAC are also encouraged to apply. PhD in astronomy or physics is required. Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD received no earlier than in 2009. Candidates can apply before finishing their PhD, if the PhD defense is scheduled for no later than December 20., 2013 (a letter from the supervisor stating the planned date of the defense must be submitted). A PhD diploma is required by the date of employment.

Successful candidates are expected to start their appointment no later than January 1., 2014. The position is initially awarded for 2 years, with a possibility to extend it to a third year, depending on successful performance of the candidate and financing possibilities. The salary will be competitive with that of other researchers in Poland. For more information contact Ms. Anna Wyrębek (e-mail: anetka@camk.edu.pl), or prof. Piotr Życki (ptz@camk.edu.pl).

Applicants should send a copy of the PhD diploma, a CV, a publication list, a resume with statement of research interests and plans, and they should arrange for two recommendation letters to be sent directly to: Copernicus Astronomical Center, Bartycka 18, 00-716 Warszawa, POLAND. Documents can be submitted electronically in pdf format to recruitment@camk.edu.pl. Application deadline: June 1st, 2013.
