The Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CAMK PAN) in Warsaw, Poland, invites applications for a masters student project funded by the National Science Center (NCN). The successful applicant will collaborate with Dr. Abbas Askar on the project “Growth of black holes in stellar clusters”, through the POLONEZ BIS grant No. 2021/43/P/ST9/03167 co-funded by the National Science Centre and the European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement no. 945339.
The studentship with an amount of 4000 PLN/month, gross is available for a period of 4 months.
The project will commence on 15th July 2024.
The main task of the student is to use results from MOCCA star cluster simulations to investigate the formation and growth of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH) in dense star clusters models. The student will prepare a data analysis pipeline that will automatically extract information from simulation data for events that lead to IMBH growth. This includes tidal disruption events and mergers of IMBH with stellar-mass BHs. The secondary task of the student will be connected to constructing mock photometric observations using snapshots from simulated star cluster models that harbour IMBH and to further investigate their observational properties of these star clusters.
The main requirement for this position is the possession of a valid bachelor’s degree in astronomy/astrophysics (or physics) and it is also required that the applicant is currently enrolled in a masters program in astronomy/astrophysics or physics (a student of a full-time first or second-cycle degree programme or uniform Master’s studies at a university in Poland).
Advantages will be: good knowledge of the English language, experience with programming and developing data analysis scripts. Prior research experience will also be an advantage.
The applicants should provide:
- a copy of their bachelor diploma/transcript;
- a proof of enrollment in masters program (confirmation from the dean’s office);
- a CV including education history, information about eventual scientific achievements (publications, awards and scholarships, participation in scientific conferences, workshops and research programs);
- a short letter of motivation;
- and a signed GDPR declaration, available at:

Applications should be sent in pdf form to recruitment@camk.edu.pl with a subject „Studentship in Star Cluster Dynamics and Black Hole Growth”.
Deadline for applications is 7 July 2024, 23:59 CET.
The applications will be reviewed by the recruitment committee soon after this date and will be resolved by 11 July 2024.
The review will be carried out according to the "Regulations for awarding NCN scholarships for NCN-funded research projects" (Annex to Resolution No 25/2019 of the NCN Council, dated on March 14, 2019).
