The Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center is opening a call for 2 scholarships to work on neutron star physics and continuous gravitational wave sources. The scholarships are available to graduate students currently enrolled or accepted for the year 2019/2020 in a doctoral school in the fields of astrophysics, astronomy and physics.
The positions are open for 3 years (however, no later than the end of the project duration), starting October 1st, 2019.
The competitive salary is being offered: 4500 PLN/month in the framework of the OPUS NCN Polish grant (no: 2018/29/B/ST9/02013), lead by prof. Zdunik.
The first candidate will work with prof. J.L. Zdunik on the preparation of the numerical code to calculate the evolution of the original, catalyzed crust during accretion and determination of the properties of the partially accreted crust.
The second candidate will work with dr. hab. B. Haskell study deformations in neutron star crusts due to asymmetric deep crustal heating and implement of the results in gravitational wave searches.
The students will join the neutron star group and will work in a vibrant and international environment of Polish Academy of Science Center for Astrophysics (Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center) at Warsaw, Poland.
We seek the best and the most independent students to take part in our ground-breaking project. The selection will be fully based on the quality of the application. All minorities are encouraged to apply.
For the first position experience in modelling neutron star crusts and crustal reactions will be an advantage.
For the second position experience with MHD simulations of neutron stars and/or LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave searches will be an advantage.
