Post-doctoral positions in observational astronomy ("Extragalactic distance scale")

Applications are invited for 2 postdoctoral positions at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (CAMK PAN), in Warsaw, Poland, in the field of extragalactic distance scale.

One successful applicant will work with Prof. Grzegorz Pietrzynski on the project “A sub-percent distance scale from binaries and Cepheids” funded by the European Research Council. The work (1.5 years) will include the analysis of  high-resolution spectra, optical and near infrared photometry with the aim to measure precise and accurate distances to Galactic and extragalactic objects.

Another successful applicant will work with Prof. Grzegorz Pietrzynski on the project “A precision and accurate Hubble constant determination in the era of Gaia” funded by the National Science Center. This position is offered for two years.  Scope of work will include photometric and spectroscopic observations of eclipsing binary systems, modelling of selected systems with the Wilson - Devinney code, presentation of the obtained results during the conference and in a form of a scientific paper.

NCAC is the leading astrophysical institute in Poland, hosting about 50 staff researchers and 30 PhD students. NCAC scientists participate in many international projects, e.g., BRITE, Herschel, CTA, SALT, ATHENA.

The preferred starting date for both position is April 2020, but is to some extent negotiable. The salary of the successful candidate will be comparable to that of Polish researchers at the same career stage. The candidates for postdoc positions are expected to have a valid PhD degree in astronomy at the starting date.

Applications (in pdf format) should be sent to pietrzyn@camk.edu.pl and must include a CV with list of publications, a copy of the PhD diploma, and a short statement of research achievements and plans (maximum 2 pages), a scan of a signed DGPD form (available from
https://www.camk.edu.pl/media/uploads_current/o_instytucie/rodo/ncn/rodo_deklaracja_ncn_ang.pdf  - NCN grant

and: https://www.camk.edu.pl/media/uploads_current/o_instytucie/rodo/erc_dgpd.pdf - ERC grant) must also be submitted.

For full consideration, applications should be received by February 14th, 2020.

The review of the applications will begin soon after this date and continue until the positions are filled.
