Competition for a scholarship in spectroscopic analysis of metal-poor stars

The Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center in Warsaw, Poland, announces a call for a PhD student research scholarship within the OPUS LAP grant “The old Milky Way: a holistic approach for the accurate analysis of metal-poor stars”, nr. 2022/47/I/ST9/02358, led by dr hab. Rodolfo Smiljanic and financed by the National Science Centre (NCN).

The scholarship is available for 12 months with starting date envisioned in 1st of January 2024.

Candidates must be in possession of a valid MSc degree or equivalent in astronomy, physics, engineering or related fields, by the starting date. Candidates should have experience in the area of stellar chemical abundances. The scope of the work includes the determination of atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances in a sample of metal-poor stars observed with the SALT telescope.

The stipend amount is 5000 PLN gross, before taxes, monthly. Additional funding for travel is available.

The following documents should be provided by the applicants:

1) a short (3-pages) CV with personal data, education history, information concerning the scientific accomplishments obtained so far, and publication list; 2) copy of the bachelor or master diploma; 3) a short description of research interests (max two pages); 4) a scan of the signed NCN GDPR document available here

NCN scholarships may be awarded to a person who meets the criteria of the NCN rules “Regulations for awarding scholarships for NCN-funded research projects” (annex to resolution 25/2019 of the Council of NCN of March 14, 2019).
